Black Beluga Lentils
What are they?
Named for their resemblance to Beluga caviar, black lentils are an edible pulse from the seed pod of the lentil plant with a warm, nutty flavour. A dietary staple throughout India and the surrounding countries. Lentils have been part of the human diet for the last 13,000 years. A versatile earthy delight!
What are the nutritional benefits?
Lentils contain high levels of fibre and protein whilst being low in fat and calories. They also contain folate, potassium and iron. Specifically, black lentils get their dark hue from the high concentrations of anthocyanins which are also found in blue-purple fruits which are considered to have memory-boosting and cancer-fighting properties.
Where can I use them?
Relatively quick to cook in under 30 minutes, they can be used in a huge variety of dishes such as soups, curries, stews and casseroles. Use them as a meat replacement in tacos and veggie burgers. Unlike other lentils, Black Beluga lentils hold their shape well during cooking so they are great for salads and pilaffs. They are also smaller in size and have a more mild flavour than their counterparts.
